May Campaign Email

Colbert-RileyDear UST Family: Amid the excitement of graduation and end-of-semester festivities last week, we received some news that gave us even more reason to celebrate. The largest gift in UST history was pledged by longtime friends Carol and Odis Peavy in support of Faith in Our Future: The Campaign for the University of St. Thomas. Subject to board approval on June 5, the UST School of Nursing will be renamed the Carol and Odis Peavy School of Nursing in perpetuity. The school reopened in 2012 after a 26-year hiatus, in large part because of the personal dedication of Carol Peavy, a nursing alumna and former UST nursing faculty member. Read more about the Peavys’ special connection to UST nursing. The Peavy gift supports UST’s effort to rapidly complete funding for the Center for Science and Health Professions (CSHP), the permanent home for the School of Nursing. The gift brings total CSHP commitments to $21.5 million and comes at a critical time in the campaign. The board recently approved a plan for the phased construction of the CSHP, beginning with the main building at a cost of more than $47 million. The Peavy gift, coupled with many more received over the course of the campaign, puts us nearly halfway to that goal. It’s important that we keep this momentum because we hope to raise the remaining funds for the main building over the next 221 days. With this goal met by the end of this year – and with board approval – we plan to break ground in early 2015 and open the building in January 2017. Our ever-increasing STEM enrollment dictates this ambitious timeline, as the demands on lab space are at capacity. These are historic times at UST, and we are blessed to have your support and advocacy. We look forward to updating you on the campaign again soon. Meanwhile, please contact us at if you have feedback or questions. With gratitude, Cynthia Colbert Riley, MLA ’95 Vice President for Institutional Advancement
